For our area, late winter, before the spring germination window opens, with a second look ahead of fall rains. Timing beats product: prevention after the weeds are up is just watering them.
In Anaheim lawns it is usually crabgrass, spurge and nutsedge in summer, with broadleaf rosettes showing up after winter rain. Beds and DG paths pull oxalis and annual grasses. Each gets treated differently, which is why identification comes first.
Density and darkness. A thick lawn cut at the right height leaves no daylight for seeds, and mulched beds block germination. Control is the visit; prevention is the routine.
